Combat climate change through technology

Pilot studies contracts awarded

The partnership behind  European C02 Test Centre Mongstad (TCM) has signed contracts for technical pilot studies of amine-based carbon capture systems with Aker Clean Carbon AS and the Canadian-American company HTC Purenergy Inc./Bechtel Overseas Corporation.

The pilot studies will help form the basis for making a final investment decision in the fourth quarter of 2008 on whether to build an amine-based test plant. Amine-based carbon capture is among the technologies with the greatest potential for full-scale carbon capture in the short-term. In addition to testing amine technologies, there are plans for testing an alternative, newly-developed carbonate technology at Mongstad.

“The signing of the contracts was an important milestone and a decisive step forward in the work to build a test centre for carbon capture at Mongstad. The amine technology is well known but it can be improved in order to reduce investment costs and energy requirements,” says Bjørn-Erik Haugan, head of Gassnova, on behalf of the TCM partnership. The TCM partnership consists of DONG Energy, Gassnova SF,
A/S Norske Shell, StatoilHydro ASA and Vattenfall AB.
